Change Has Come to the Workplace: The Workplace Fairness 2009 Labor Day Report
At Workplace Fairness, we keep you informed about the most important developments in the American workplace – the developments that most profoundly affect America's working people. And in the past year, there was no more important development affecting the workplace than the election of President Barack Obama. After eight years of an Administration that could generally be characterized as hostile to workers’ rights and more interested in promoting business interests than ensuring employees were protected, the election of a more worker-friendly president has the potential to bring about significant change. And so it has – even in the first eight months of what some might consider a tumultuous presidency.
In Change Has Come to the Workplace, written by legal intern Hannah Goitein (The George Washington University Law School Class of 2011), we highlight the changes we have already seen in the last several months, as well as what is on the horizon. Much has already been accomplished, between the enactment of the Lilly Ledbetter Equal Pay Act, and the appointment of Labor Secretary Hilda Solis, who has passionately championed workers’ rights throughout her illustrious career. But much remains to be accomplished, as major battles lie ahead over health care reform and the Employee Free Choice Act. And there remain significant hurdles that make change more difficult, between a nation still struggling to recover from the economic recession, and the recent loss of workers’ most aggressive legislative champion in the Senate, Sen. Edward M. Kennedy.
If the kind of change affecting workers that President Obama and his supporters envisioned is to be fully realized, every single person who works for a living must be involved. If you care about having adequate and affordable health care, or finally ending the pernicious and legally-sanctioned discrimination against LGBT workers currently experienced, you must become involved – you cannot leave change to others in these trying times.
