Minimum wage increase backed, but opposition likely

Source: Ray Barrington, Green Bay News-Chronicle

Date: May 21, 2004

The state Department of Workforce Development recently formed an advisory council to look at

raising the minimum wage in Wisconsin. The council voted 16-2 to recommend a raise to $5.70 an hour this year

and $6.50 an hour in 2005. That's if the proposal went quickly to the Legislature and wasn't opposed. But

state Assembly and Senate Labor Committees, you realize that may not happen soon.

Date: May 19, 2004

More than 30 people testified Tuesday in favor of plans to raise Wisconsin's minimum wage.

At issue is a proposal to raise the general minimum wage to $5.70 an hour in October and $6.50 in October 2005

from the current rate of $5.15, which took effect in 1997. The proposal is a compromise recommendation of a

state advisory council made up of business, labor and legislative representatives.
