Workplace rules back on Capitol agenda

More than a dozen
bills that would impose broad regulations on the Hawaii workplace by setting new rules for breaks, vacations,
sick leave, hiring and pay are under consideration by the Legislature this year. One House bill would make "an
abusive work environment" illegal. Another would require companies with more than 100 workers to provide
child-care services. In addition to sick leave and meal-break bills, there is [a bill] mandating four weeks of
paid vacation for families of deployed military personnel. Another would allow workers to use temporary
disability insurance to cover family leave. Last week, the House Committee on Labor and Public Employment heard
spirited arguments for several hours from both union and business representatives on several of the bills.
