Proposal would end workplace smoking in state

This could be another nail in the coffin for "coffin nails"--cigarettes. An effort to restrict smoking
statewide through a ballot initiative to some extent mirrors local restrictions already in place in Tucson and
Pima County. The effort aims to ban smoking in most workplaces, no matter how small the company. Bob McMahon, a
former smoker who operates 15 restaurants in Tucson, said Arizona should "ban cigarettes, period. The jury's
been in for a long time. Smoking's not good for you." A number of cities and counties in Arizona already have
their own anti-smoking laws.
Anti-Smoking Groups Don't Support Tucson Lawmaker's Workplace Smoking Ban

A Tucson legislator working to create a statewide smoking ban in all workplaces — including
restaurants and bars — is doing it without the help of staunch anti-smoking groups. Rep. Linda Lopez, D-Tucson,
said the Arizona chapters of the American Heart Association, the American Lung Association and the American
Cancer Society are not supporting her effort and that could hurt her attempts to shepherd a smoking ban bill
through the Legislature next year. "They are staying neutral on it. The idea of them being neutral is
disconcerting," Lopez said. "I find it troubling because you would think these three organizations would be
supportive of banning smoking in all workplaces. They think the Legislature will screw it up."
